Multani Mitti for Skin: Benefits, Uses, and How to Pick the Right Soap
ShuddhherbShare
Multani Mitti — Fuller's Earth — is one of the oldest ingredients in Indian skincare, used long before "clay masks" became a beauty-aisle trend. Here's a straight breakdown of what it does and how to use it.
What Multani Mitti Actually Does
Multani Mitti is a mineral-rich clay known primarily for its oil-absorbing properties. It draws out excess sebum and surface impurities from the skin, which is why it's traditionally recommended for oily and acne-prone skin types. It also provides very gentle mechanical exfoliation as it's rinsed off.
Multani Mitti Soap vs. Multani Mitti Face Pack
A face pack (mixed with rosewater or milk) sits on the skin longer and gives a more concentrated treatment. A Multani Mitti soap, on the other hand, is meant for regular daily cleansing — a lighter, more consistent version of the same benefit, without the extra step of mixing a paste. It's the more practical option if you want the benefits woven into your normal routine rather than a weekly ritual.
Who Should (and Shouldn't) Use It
Multani Mitti works well for oily and combination skin. If your skin runs very dry, it can be slightly drying with daily use — pairing it with a soap that also contains Aloe Vera or Vitamin E (to offset that) is usually a better call than plain clay alone.
How to Use a Multani Mitti Soap Properly
- Wet your skin with lukewarm water first — this helps open pores before cleansing.
- Lather gently, don't scrub hard — the clay does the work, not friction.
- Rinse thoroughly and pat (don't rub) dry.
- Follow with a light moisturizer, especially if you have combination skin.
Our Multani Mitti Soap is handmade with added Aloe Vera and Lavender Oil to balance the clay's oil-absorbing effect, and is part of our full handmade soap collection.
